Preparing for employment, building workplace skills and confidence

Finding and maintaining community-based employment can involve challenges such as identifying suitable work, understanding workplace expectations, or determining what accommodations may be needed. Supported Employment is intended for individuals with significant disabilities who want to pursue employment with community businesses and need individualized assistance throughout the employment process. In Montgomery County and other areas served by SHSG, support is centered on the individual’s employment goals, capabilities, and support needs rather than placing the person into a predetermined type of job.

How It Works

Supported Employment services may include the following:

Pre-vocational activities

  • Assessing capabilities and interests
  • Resume development
  • Interview preparation

Addressing barriers to employment

  • Workplace accommodations
  • Assistive technology

Job-retention support

  • Workplace relationships
  • Meeting employer expectations

Employment planning with a job coach

  • Employment goals
  • Capabilities
  • Support needs

What to Expect

The employment process begins with activities that help identify the individual’s capabilities, interests, and employment goals. A job coach works with the individual to develop an Employment Plan and may provide support related to preparation, workplace barriers, and job retention. As the individual enters employment, support can address practical workplace situations such as relationships with coworkers and understanding employer expectations.
